The first step to start your rural posting is the Department of Health Services (DOHS), located at Teku, Kathmandu. DOHS handles all official work related to posting anyone under the government health service of Nepal.
In order to get your appointment letter for your desired health center, a form to be filled up is available at the station right next to the entrance. You will have to submit the filled-up form along with the documents mentioned:
- MBBS Transcript/Internship Completion Certificate/Character Certificate
- Citizenship
- Letter of the bond given by Ministry of Education or PAHS (for students of PAHS)Temporary registration certificate from Nepal Medical Council
Arrange all of them serially, get it registered (दर्ता) - they will add a reference number (चलानी नम्बर) to it. Submit it in the doctor section (चिकित्सक फाँँट) located on the first floor.
My experience was a bit different. During our posting, we were around 32 recent graduates awaiting to be posted from PAHS alone. DOHS, in collaboration with PAHS, had arranged a short interaction session where we were informed about the dos and don'ts and who to contact in case of emergencies. We were then narrated (yes!!) a list of available PHCs and Hospitals to choose from. We later submitted the form with documents and came to know about our respective posting in around three weeks - a delay probably owing to the Dashain holidays.
In the majority of cases, however, you can know about the available options by requesting a list in the doctor section. Also, you will have to constantly keep in touch with the DOHS for when the appointment letter will be ready.
Getting work done in the DOHS can sometimes get really frustrating - especially as medics, we at times fail to understand proper Nepali terms and official procedures. Nevertheless, be polite and ask!
